What size of twigs have you been using, and where did you gather them from? It could be excess moisture, but packing them too densely can also be a problem. Near-vertical seems to be best. I’ve always found it perfectly reliable, and more so than gas. You need to build up heat gradually – the starter fuel is pretty much 100% used on just getting the temperature of the gases in the chamber to flashpoint, and after that you can feed larger, thumb-thickness sticks in to keep it going. Don’t feed in too much at once. Feed the sticks in one by one.

Just received one as a present and tried it out in the garden today….nothing but smoke 90% of the time. Did get a boil in the end, I’m guessing the twigs I used just weren’t dry enough, I thought they seemed ok but I reckon that must have been the problem, a bit of that and also maybe pushing too much fuel in. Anyway, gonna have another try as it’s a nifty piece of equipment, not sure ill backpack with it though as not reliable enough as gas and quite a bit heavier than a pocket rocket with gas. Do you prod the fuel at all when it’s inside to make air pockets or do you just keep feeding the twigs in vertically? I was prodding it today hoping to make the smoke disappear!
